Hey, Old Guys!

http://it.slashdot.org/it/05/09/29/1631215.shtml?tid=126&tid=218

Wow, it makes me a little sad but I kinda understand how they feel. I spent a lot of my younger IT days working on elements that were very old, but very cool. Before I ever set my hands on NT 3.5 I worked on SunOS, BSD, RedHat. I'm more comfortable in a command line than I am a new Windows interface at times.

Its a sad commentary on the state of technology that we are losing site of what got us to where we are. I'm not saying it's possible for any one person to learn everything from abacus, basic AND/OR gates and every programming language there is, but we shouldn't completely dismiss them as obsolete. Here here to the older generation of IT! I salute you sirs.

Anime Review: Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! (Vol 1-3)

Full Review Posted to Vraxx.com

OK I admit, somehow I forgot to add the fact I've been watching and wating very anxiously for the remainder of Fumoffu. The Full Metal Panic! spin off (Or Sequel if you prefer), steers away from the high-action focus of its original and instead centers on the high school life of our lovable but clueless Sousuke Sagara and the ever brash Kaname Chidori.

While the 2nd volume was a bit light, I can whole heartily say that the 1st and 3rd volumes are very entertaining. Episodes 7 and 9 are absolutely hillarious. With great dialogue in 7 and a great use of "background" throughout 9.

With just one more volume to go, I give this a strong 8/10. It's not going to appeal to everybody, but FMP! fans should definately consider watching at least the first 5 episodes.

An In Field Example

Vraxx: this is about as useless as Windows ME on a 386
Vraxx: i'm currently using RegMon, FileMon, Nmap, Ethereal, Visual Studio 2003
Vraxx: fuck i'd even use pokemon if it'll help
Vraxx: Fixachoo I choose you!

Lesson to the learned, it doesn't get more craptacusucktastic than trying to reverse engineer something and having to whip out every tool on the face of the planet to do it...

Expanding the IT Lexicon

I'd like to introduce today's new word for the IT community.

craptacusucktastic (adj)-- Something that is both crappy and sucky, superlative, in a work environment.

Usage: Debugging someone elses shit is craptacusucktastic.

I'm releasing this word under the GPL, so please feel free to modify it to suit your needs.

All Your PC Are Belong to Us

Vraxxism for the day

Vraxx: You know i figured out what UAP will become known as unofficially if it fails.
Vraxx: U All Pwned

Now I'm not a neigh sayer but I'd like to see the new User Account Protection deployed first before making a judgment call. In a utopian world it does address some of the confusing elements of Windows security and makes it easier to lock down a system for Joe-User. In the worst case scenario, it shows to be no more effective at isolating execution permission and bleed over of access than XP. We'll just have to wait and see.

Because sometimes, you just gotta go

WARNING WARNING WARNING
I REALLY went too far setting up this dialogue. For those of you offended by swear words or sexual jokes please do not read further

Volcom: alright
Volcom: im going anal then

Now to Volcom's credit I did set him up for this one:

Vraxx: yeah so like slap an extra 512 and an ibook would probably be ok
Volcom: its just...
Volcom: not a powerbook
Volcom: thats what bugs
Volcom: LOL
Volcom: but shit
Volcom: if its going obsolete
Volcom: im not gonna chunk that cash out for casual computing
Vraxx: well and i'm creating this totally at random
Vraxx: yes but an ass just isn't a pussy but ppl still do anal :p
Volcom: interesting

Some people just don't fit it...

KC: no wonder my room has been so hot the past couple of days
KC: someone closed my window! and i didnt notice
Rog: it's finally cool enough here to keep the windows open..
Cloud: it's cool enough here to keep the windows closed
Vraxx: it's too cluttered here, i'm gonna minimize windows

When you care enough to give the very best...

A bold new experiment...

Halbarad: ok, brb
Halbarad: need to deliver head
Halbarad: =P
Vraxx: giving head now are we?

I should note, Hal is actually doing experiments involving animal skulls… I hope…

[update] Apparently my factual information is off. Hal is doing experiments with cat heads/ears, acoustic stuff. *woosh*

Slashdot | GPL to be Modified to Penalize Patents and DRM

Slashdot | GPL to be Modified to Penalize Patents and DRM

Thought I'd chime in with my thoughts on the subject. While I support the OSS movement and believe that free software is a strong motivator in creating real competition amongst service oriented companies in IT, I don't believe it should ascribe to these types of isolationistic licenses.

Now granted this is just something that's drumming up in RMS' head, but I hope that the final draft of the GPL v3 license is more flexible than this rumor mill let's on. I'm not going to play zealot and say that OSS is always the answer because frankly there are some commercial packages out there that do a great job. Let's keep a clear head going forward with these types of ideas. Be it open or closed source, there's room to work together. Unfortunately patent disputes and copyright enforcement are going to make that cooperation a matter of dancing on glass.

In honor of my own server issues -- Today's Blast from the past Vraxxism

<Miyazawa>Hal, get it up!

Little background here, Miya is actually referring to a HL2 Counter-Strike Source server... but boy for a while there, we were worried about hal and performance anxiety... Rest assured though, hal did get it up... eventually.
